 Garden Trees Index Page

Even the smallest garden can support a small potted tree and the medium to larger sized gardens need trees to provide structure. These pages aim primarily to give helpful and practical advice on how to choose and grow trees in your garden. We also show lots of pictures of leaves, bark and fruit to assist you in identifying tree species and varieties. The list below is small, we know, but over the next year all the major tree species will be covered in detail.

Message: In spring, shorten side shoots to five good buds. In following winter, shorten the leader to leave 8-10 in of new growth and cut back laterals to 6-8 in to a downward bud.

Message: Hello Eugene
Always buy from a reputable supplier, preferably a nursery rather than a retailer. An espalier against a wall would be good in a garden your size.

Message: Hi,

I'm wondering if you could help please? I'm looking for a low maintenance fruit tree for a small garden. The garden is south facing and has well drained loamy/sandy soil. We generally get cold winds in this area and I don't know of any other gardens locally that has fruit trees so I'm looking for a self fertiliser please.

Many Thanks

Lisa Gallagher

Message: Hi, I'm looking to buy some plants and small trees for the front garden. Can someone recommend a place in Bristol for cheap plants? I dont want to be spending huge amounts of money at B&Q as there's got to be a better place to buy these from like a garden centre.

Message: Hi there

I moved into my new property recently and there are two large shrubs. As one is near the extension and the toilet drain, I wondered if the shrubs would do any damage as I've heard trees can damage drains. I also planted a dwarf flowering cherry blossom tree but I've been told this will not damage my property, can you help.

Many thanks,

Johan

Message: Can you advise me with regard to a lime tree, planted 2 years ago.
It starts with the leaves on a branch discolouring (paler than usual), then shrivelling up but the leaves closest to the centre of the tree still ok.
I noticed that there was a fungus at the base of the tree and have removed this, spraying the bark with bouillie bordelaise (copper sulphate).

Should I remove the diseased section of the branches?
Is there anything I can do to prevent the next 3 yellowing branches from going the same way?

Thanks,

Message: Hi, I had a beautiful acer palmatum potted, but recently had a teenagers party, which unfortunately my acer was snapped off. Is it likely it will grow again, as it does have a shoot coming off the bottom of the main stalk, or should I start again? Sad acer owner!

Message: Hi, I live in the UK and have 2 small bay trees that are kept in containers. They were doing well until about this time last year when they developed lots of tiny black spots on the leaves. There was no improvement after a few months so I decided to prune the bad leaves. Unfortunately, the situation was worse than I had thought and I ended up removing every single leaf from the trees! I left the trees outside all winter (from what I have read, this seems like a bad idea)! It has now been nearly a year and I have not had any signs of re-growth. Is there anything I can do to encourage re-growth? Or does it sound like they are dead?

Many thanks
