The premier gardening information source
The cafe is pleasantly laid out, clean and modern with a choice of three seating areas under cover
and an outdoor seating area. There was the main seating area, a conservatory area and a coffee
lounge. All were reasonably pleasant with the best being the coffee lounge. Its attractive layout
was remarked upon by two separate customers in the short time we were there. The outdoor area was
closed at the time of our visit.
At the time of our visit there were no queues. The prices were about average for
a modern garden centre cafe with main meals in the range 7 to 8. There were also
lots of snack meals including baked potatoes, a well-stocked salad bar, coffees and
teas. HOUSE PLANTS
There was a reasonable range of healthy looking houseplants for sale. This is
good to see because many garden centres stock a very poor range with some stocking
no houseplants at all. The display was unappealing but functional. INDOOR SALES AREA
The indoor sales area was typical of a modern format garden centre.
Lots of gifts, cards, outdoor furniture and barbecues.
It was laid out with wide paths. Interestingly, if you compare the
indoor and outdoor sales areas, it is clear that much more thought has gone into the
indoor sales area. AQUATICS
Dobbies own aquatics centre was a medium sized one stocking cold water and
tropical fish. See the unusual guarantee on the left. As well as fish the shop
stocked a good range of feeds and aquatics accessories.

Cafe at Dobbies, Shepton Mallet
CAFE AT DOBBIES GARDEN CENTRE SHEPTON MALLET
The food quality was about average for garden centre food with nothing to mark it
out as particularly good or bad. Service was prompt, efficient and pleasant.
The disabled facilities were good. Almost all areas, indoors and outside were accessible for
a wheelchair. The paths were wide with no significant slopes or difficult areas.
The toilets were clean modern and functional. There were ladies, gents, disabled and baby
changing facilities. See the three pictures below of the unusual gents toilets. Very similar
to those at Barton Grange garden centre but not
quite as good. Interesting though!
There was a large car park which was outside the entrance. It was on level free draining
ground which was tarmac.

SUMMARY
Dobbies at Shepton Mallet is a modern, medium to large garden centre which supplies most
gardening needs. It also has a relatively large indoor shopping area. The cafe is adequate
if unremarkable.

Message: I have no idea when you visited this centre - I found the cafe, untidy, unhelpful staff who seemed overwhelmed that there were more than 10 people waiting to be served. When I finally got to the point where I could order which took 13 minutes! I was told by the assitant that she would have to 'go and find me a teapot'!
Two people were in the process of receiving refunds as their meals took so long to arrive.
The tables looked like they had not been wiped in ages and the floor was littered with food.
What outside eating area - I could not find one.
The toilet had not been cleaned that was obvious by the smell.
Plant area outside ok - nothing to write home about.
Inside houseplants - you could buy this stuff anywhere with a supplier in Holland.
All in all a big dissapointment - will go to my local independant garden centre in future!
