HOUSE PLANTS

There was a good selection of house plants at Dobbies, Preston. They were attractively arranged and in good condition generally. Prices were about average. There was little attempt to group the plants by growing conditions.

AQUATICS AND PETS

The large aquatics department stocked a good range of fish, accessories and feeds. It was attractively arranged and well worth a look especially if you have kids with you.

There were no live pets sold although there was a fair range of pet accessories. Garden birds were well catered for with a good range of bird tables. Bird tables

GENERAL SHOPPING AREA

Shopping area The non-gardening shopping area was massive. It was almost a department store. We guess that it had about eight times the floor area compared to the indoor gardening shopping area.

It was arranged on three levels with a central lift connecting each floor to assist with disabled access.

CAFE

Greenapple Cafe at Dobbies, Preston The Greenapple Cafe is large and thoroughly modern. It's clean, spacious, airy and attractively furnished and decorated. Unusually for a garden centre cafe, it is licensed to sell alcoholic drinks. There was a range of wines and bottled beers on offer.

There was a selection of main meal specials at around 6.95.

What grabbed our attention was the extremely well-stocked salad bar. For 6.95 you could pile a large plate with as much salad as you wanted!

A good price indeed because the offerings included good quality ham, gala pie, salmon, tuna mayonnaise to name but a few. The cheese was particularly tasty and unusual.

Salad

Another good value offering were the freshly made (in front of your eyes) pancakes. They varied from just over 2 to just under 4 depending on the filling you chose. Of course, the taste would depend on who was cooking it for you but ours was exceptionally good.

The cafe also stocked a good variety of sandwiches, Paninis and baguettes for around 4. Teas, coffees and cakes were also available.

The quality of the food was consistently high and the presentation attractive. Hot food was served to your table. Overall we rate the cafe highly both for the quality of the food and value for money.

DISABLED FACILITIES
Excellent in the outside plant area with wide aisles. Inside was also good although the design of a multi-level shopping area means that wheelchair users would need to use the lift.

TOILETS
The toilets were clean and modern. There were toilets for the disabled and facilities for mother and toddlers.

CAR PARKING
More than sufficient. All the car parking area was flat and easily accessible.

SUMMARY
A very large and modern garden centre with a huge proportion of the shopping area devoted to non-gardening items. Gardening-wise, you will also find everything you want. Plants were healthy and carry that five year hardy plant guarantee.

An excellent cafe with some of the food being unusual. The salad bar particularly impressed us and the fresh pancakes were a delight.
