Clear leaves from the lawn and flower beds

The greatest beauty of this month is leaf colour. The deep red Virginia creeper, the bronzed beech hedges and the fiery orange of cherry trees are all at their best now.

Smaller shrubs such as dogwood, the smoke bush, acer and sumach also provide a blaze of colour.

Several climbers also provide colour well into this month including the late flowering Clematis such as 'Ernest Markham' and the berries on the Christmas Cherry.

The easiest way to prune rambler roses is to untie them from their supports and lay them on the ground. Cut out at ground level all stems that have produced flowers this season. Keep all other stems which have grown this season and tie them back to the supports.
