Mrs James Mason was bred by Barry Fretwell at the Peveril Clematis Nursery in Devon.  James and Clarissa Mason had ordered a number of varieties of clematis from the nursery, and their fondness for white flowers led to a new variety - with an appropriate 'dark eye' - being named for James.

Later, a new seedling with rich violet colouring found favour with Clarissa (wife of actor James Mason), and it was accordingly named Mrs James Mason for her. The two plants are growing side by side on the front of the Nursery property, and both are among the most popular plants sold there.
